Tumaini: Breaking Stigma, Building Hope
On 27th June 2027, Science Horizons Kenya, in partnership with the Universal Humanitarian Development Program (UHDP) and the Octopizzo Foundation, conducted a community visitation to the Power Women Group in Kibera under the initiative "Tumaini: Breaking Stigma, Building Hope."
The visit was more than an act of giving back,it was an opportunity to listen, learn, and engage directly with women living with HIV and their families. Through open discussions and interactive sessions, we gained valuable insights into the realities they face and explored practical ways of creating lasting social and economic impact.
Listening to the Voices of Women
The women openly shared their experiences of living with HIV, highlighting that while access to treatment has improved over the years, many continue to face significant socio-economic challenges that affect their quality of life.
Among the key issues raised were:
Unemployment and financial hardship, with many women lacking a stable source of income.
Limited livelihood opportunities, forcing many to rely on small-scale beadwork, tailoring, and handmade crafts that are often insufficient to meet their families' basic needs.
Challenges faced by their children and youth, many of whom have completed primary or secondary school but are unable to pursue further education or secure employment due to financial constraints.
Mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and, in some cases, substance abuse among unemployed youth who struggle to envision a brighter future.
The continued stigma associated with HIV, which affects self-esteem, social inclusion, and access to opportunities.
Despite these challenges, the women demonstrated remarkable resilience by supporting one another through their community group and creating handcrafted products to generate income. Their determination reflects the power of community, but it also underscores the need for greater investment in sustainable economic opportunities.
Looking Beyond Immediate Support
While the visitation included the donation of essential supplies, discussions made it clear that long-term empowerment requires more than short-term assistance.
The women expressed a desire for:
Skills development and vocational training for both women and youth.
Access to startup capital and business support to expand their existing enterprises.
Stronger market access for their handmade products.
A structured community centre capable of supporting more women and creating employment opportunities.
Digital skills and an active social media presence to showcase their work, raise awareness, and connect with wider markets and potential supporters.
These aspirations align closely with our vision of building resilient communities where women living with HIV are not only supported but empowered to achieve economic independence and improved well-being.
Our Commitment Going Forward
The insights gathered during this visit have informed the development of the Tumaini Initiative, a long-term community empowerment programme that seeks to address the interconnected challenges of HIV, poverty, unemployment, mental health, and social exclusion.
Working alongside community members and partners, we aim to:
Strengthen sustainable livelihoods for women living with HIV.
Create skills development and entrepreneurship opportunities for vulnerable youth.
Promote mental health awareness and psychosocial support.
Increase HIV awareness while reducing stigma and discrimination.
Enhance the digital visibility and market reach of community-led enterprises.
Build partnerships that mobilize resources and create lasting opportunities for women and their families.
Building Hope Together
The visit to the Power Women Group reaffirmed that meaningful change begins by listening to communities and working alongside them to develop sustainable solutions.
