Turning Clean Energy into Opportunity

Kenya is taking a significant step towards sustainable urban development following a cooperation agreement between the County Government of Uasin Gishu and Czech firm SEKO Aerospace in Eldoret to advance plans for solar-powered street lighting and smart-city infrastructure. Signed in October 2026, the agreement marks progress towards a cleaner, safer and more technologically connected city.
The proposed Eldoret Green Lighting and Smart City Project combines renewable energy with digital infrastructure. Plans include a solar power generation plant, solar-powered streetlights, intelligent traffic management, electric vehicle charging stations, public Wi-Fi hotspots and an interconnected CCTV network. The project is expected to improve energy efficiency, strengthen public safety and support Eldoret’s ambitions for sustainable urban growth. However, final negotiations and financial arrangements remain important steps before implementation.
The significance of Eldoret’s solar ambitions extends beyond street lighting. The initiative highlights how science, technology and innovation can contribute to more efficient cities while creating opportunities for local businesses and skilled workers.
Solar energy infrastructure requires technical expertise in electrical installation, system maintenance, energy storage and monitoring. Integrating digital technologies into urban services also creates demand for skills in telecommunications, network management and smart infrastructure maintenance.
For Kenya, this presents an opportunity to connect investment in modern infrastructure with youth skills development and entrepreneurship. Technical training institutions, young innovators and local enterprises could benefit from stronger links between clean energy projects and practical training opportunities.
Ensuring that local professionals and businesses can participate in the renewable energy value chain will be important in making the benefits of such investments more inclusive. Partnerships between county governments, international technology providers and training institutions could help strengthen local capacity while supporting the adoption of sustainable technologies.
The Eldoret initiative also demonstrates the potential of integrating renewable energy with digital solutions. Solar-powered lighting could reduce reliance on conventional electricity for public lighting, while smart monitoring systems could help authorities manage infrastructure more efficiently.
These improvements could support commercial activity by making public spaces more accessible after dark. Traders, transport operators and other small businesses may benefit from better-lit streets and improved urban services, provided the infrastructure is implemented effectively and maintained over time.
The project's long-term value will depend on reliable technology, transparent implementation, adequate maintenance and measurable results. Monitoring energy savings, operating costs, environmental benefits and local employment opportunities would help establish whether the investment delivers its intended outcomes.
For Science Horizons Kenya, Eldoret’s solar ambitions reflect the importance of connecting scientific innovation with practical community needs. Sustainable technology can contribute to development most effectively when its benefits extend beyond infrastructure to include knowledge, skills, economic opportunities and environmental responsibility.
The Czech partnership offers a potential platform for technology exchange and collaboration. With deliberate investment in local skills and enterprise participation, the project could help strengthen Kenya’s capacity to develop, operate and maintain modern energy systems.
As counties explore innovative approaches to urban development, Eldoret’s experience will be worth watching. Its success will not be measured by the number of lights installed alone, but also by the quality of public services delivered, the environmental gains achieved and the opportunities created for local communities.
Eldoret’s solar ambitions therefore represent more than an infrastructure project. They offer an opportunity to demonstrate how clean energy, technological innovation and youth skills development can work together to build a more sustainable and economically vibrant future for Kenya.
