Science Horizons Kenya Participates in Kikao on the Theme: 2 Years Post #OccupyParliament
On 5 June 2026, Science Horizons Kenya joined civil society organizations, legal experts, human rights advocates, and members of the public at the Kikao on the Theme: 2 Years Post #OccupyParliament, convened by Amnesty International Kenya. The dialogue provided a timely platform to reflect on Kenya's progress in protecting the right to peaceful protest and to examine the challenges that continue to shape civic participation and democratic governance.
Two years after the #OccupyParliament movement captured national attention and amplified citizens' demands for accountability, transparency, and responsive leadership, stakeholders gathered to assess whether meaningful progress has been made in safeguarding constitutional freedoms and civic space.
The discussion featured distinguished panelists, including George Morara, Executive Director of Amnesty International Kenya, Charles Kanjama, President of the Law Society of Kenya, and representatives from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority. Their contributions provided valuable insights into the current state of civic freedoms, accountability mechanisms, and democratic participation in Kenya.
Key discussions focused on the protection of the right to protest, accountability and reparations for victims of human rights violations, police reforms and the use of force during demonstrations, and the future of democratic participation in the country. Participants reflected on lessons learned from recent civic movements and explored practical measures needed to strengthen institutional accountability and public trust.
The conversation also highlighted the critical role of young people in shaping Kenya's democratic future. As demonstrated during the #OccupyParliament movement, youth continue to be at the forefront of advocating for social justice, transparency, and meaningful citizen engagement. Ensuring that their voices are heard and protected remains essential to building an inclusive and participatory democracy.
For Science Horizons Kenya, participation in this dialogue aligns with our commitment to promoting civic engagement, accountable governance, and inclusive development. Protecting the right to peaceful assembly and expression is fundamental to ensuring that citizens can actively participate in public affairs and contribute to decision-making processes that affect their lives.
As Kenya continues to navigate complex social, economic, and political challenges, safeguarding civic space remains a shared responsibility among government institutions, oversight bodies, civil society organizations, and citizens. Open dialogue, respect for human rights, and strengthened accountability mechanisms are essential for fostering a just and democratic society.
Science Horizons Kenya remains committed to supporting initiatives that empower citizens, strengthen democratic participation, and advance human rights. The conversations sparked through forums such as this Kikao are vital in shaping a future where civic freedoms are respected, protected, and upheld for all.
The conversation continues as we work together to build a more accountable, just, and inclusive society.#OccupyParliament #CivicEngagement #HumanRights #Democracy #Accountability #YouthParticipation #Kenya
