EDUCATION
Over a million young Kenyans enter the labor market every year without the skills employers actually need while the informal sector absorbs the vast majority of new jobs created annually according to Kenya National Bureau of Statistics data. This gap between what schools teach and what the economy demands is where Vision 2030's The education pillar is being tested hardest. Competency-Based Education was meant to close this gap by building practical,
industry-ready skills — but its promise will only be realised if TVET institutions and universities are funded and equipped to deliver it, not just designed on paper.
INNOVATION
Kenya has many young innovators. The challenge is giving them a runway. This year's Young Scientists Kenya exhibition is a case in point: two students built a blockchain system to track public fund spending, and after winning, expanded it into a public transparency tool at judges' urging demonstrating how a national platform for youth innovation can turn a competition entry
into a real civic technology tool. This is exactly the kind of homegrown innovation Vision 2030's Science, Technology and Innovation pillar was built to nurture. The task now is scale: moving from isolated competition wins to sustained investment in incubators, research funding, and youth-led startups across all 47 counties, not just Nairobi.
